The South African herd represents up to 15% of Africa’s remaining population. Happily, the new owners are willing to spend huge sums for translocations across the continent
Every morning, South African conservationist Donovan Jooste looks out on to grasslands populated with some of the 2,000 southern white rhinos currently in his care. Representing 12-15% of Africa’s remaining white rhino population, there are more of the animals on this farm in the North West province of South Africa than can be found in any single wild location across the continent.
“It’s definitely a sight. It’s a unique scenario to see so many in a single place,” Jooste says. “But the conservation opportunity is even more exciting. The question is: how do we get from where we are now to having them in open, well-protected areas?”

My colleague Nina Lakhani has more on yesterday’s loss and damage agreement.
As the second day gets under way, the president of the G77 plus China group – the bloc of 135 developing countries which played a key role in yesterday’s historic resolution on operationalising the loss and damage fund – said the decision sent a clear political message.
“It was a milestone in terms of creating a positive mood for the very, very complex process on the GST [global stock take] that we had ahead of us now. But the fund needs to be filled up. The pledges announced were a welcome sign, but they were just pledges and must materialise as soon as possible. And we expect much, much more because of the impact of loss and damage in developing countries,” said ambassador Pedro Pedroso of Cuba.

In another first, this month’s episode of The Ocean Decade Show comes to you from on board the R/V Falkor as it’s undertaking an ultra fine-scale seafloor mapping expedition in the hydrothermal vent fields of the Eastern Galapágos Spreading Center. One of the members of this groundbreaking (or should we say, ground-mapping!) team is Dr. Cherisse Du Preez, a deep-sea explorer and marine biologist who works for Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Dr. Du Preez has been part of several endorsed UN Ocean Decade Actions and during this episode, we’ll dig into her penchant for exploration, the importance of working alongside Canadian First Nations tribal nations for her work, and the broader role Canada has been playing to ensure a successful Ocean Decade.

The NSW Australian Paramedics Association will take part in a 12-hour strike today, from 7am to 7pm, despite the threat of legal action.
Members will still attend emergency “lights and sirens” jobs as part of an ongoing pay dispute.
We want to assure the public that emergencies will still be attended to, with our focus intensifying on life-threatening cases.
Our decision to limit responses to non-emergency jobs enhances our capacity to manage critical cases.
Facing potential legal repercussions and a substantial fine of up to $20,000 per day, our commitment remains firm.

Strongest overhaul of rules in over three decades will cost billions as Biden administration moves to prevent public health crises
Most US cities would have to replace lead water pipes within 10 years under strict new rules proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency as the Biden administration moves to reduce lead in drinking water and prevent public health crises like the ones in Flint, Michigan, and, earlier, in Washington DC.
Millions of people consume drinking water from lead pipes and the agency said tighter standards would improve IQ scores in children and reduce high blood pressure and heart disease in adults. It is the strongest overhaul of lead rules in more than three decades, and will cost billions of dollars. Pulling it off will require overcoming enormous practical and financial obstacles.

Scientists studying the birds in Antarctica have found they snooze for 11 hours a day without falling deeply asleep
Spending your nights sleeping for just four seconds at a time might sound like a form of torture, but not for chinstrap penguins, which fall asleep thousands of times a day, new research finds.
Scientists studying the birds on King George Island in Antarctica found they nod off more than 10,000 times a day, allowing them to keep a constant eye on their nests, protecting eggs and chicks from predators. In total, the birds manage 11 hours of snoozing a day – without ever slipping into uninterrupted sleep.

There's a species of ant that is so rare, only a handful of records exist from across the entire eastern United States. North Carolina State University researcher Michelle Kirchner not only found these ants in the Triangle region of North Carolina, she is the first to document an entire colony for scientists, taxonomists and ant-thusiasts everywhere. It is the first time males of the species have been collected or photographed.

Farmland often harbors a multitude of pathogens which attack plants and reduce yields. A research team has now shown that inoculating the soil with mycorrhizal fungi can help maintain or even improve yields without the use of additional fertilizers or pesticides. In a large-scale field trial, plant yield increased by up to 40 percent.
